History:
The Hitler Youth came to life by the Jugendbund der NSDAP (JDN), which was founded in March 1922 and met for the first time in May of the same year; it was reserved for boys aged 14 to 18. Boys aged 14 to 18 were grouped together as Jungmannschaften, while the older ones were part of the Jungsturm Adolf Hitler. The SA supervised the organization and was initially led by Adolf Lenk. The JDN collapsed after the failed putsch of 1923, and several local youth groups were to fill the void, such as Lenk and Kurt Gruber’s Grossdeutsche Jugendbewegung or Rossbach’s Schilljugend, organized in both Austria and Germany. In 1926 Gruber’s Grossdeutsche Jugendbewegung was renamed as Hitler Jugend, Bund Deutscher Arbeiterjugend with Gruber as the new leader, but was soon replaced by Franz von Pfeffer.
